Dr. Jarek Nowinka attended the Plenary Meeting of ISO Technical Committee 67 Sub Committee 5 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, May 25 to 27, 2010, as the Head of Delegation of Canada to ISO TC67 SC5.
ISO Technical Committee 67 Sub Committee 5 mandates international standards for Materials Equipment and Offshore Structures for Petroleum Petrochemical and Natural Gas Industries – Casing Tubing and Drill Pipe. On 2010–05-25 and 26, Noetic’s Dr. Jaroslaw (Jarek) Nowinka represented Canada at the yearly Plenary Meeting of ISO TC 67 SC 5, which took place in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. At the meeting, delegates from member countries reviewed recent progress and future directions for standards applicable to OCTG production, qualification and use. Several resolutions were passed, setting goals for all Task Groups currently working under Sub Committee 5.
Among other topics, SC5 members discussed development of standards for thermal wells. Dr. Nowinka delivered a presentation about the new Thermal Well Casing Connection Evaluation Protocol (TWCCEP), which was developed in an industry-sponsored project coordinated by Noetic and recently released to the public domain (see link to MCP-TWCCEP page). SC5 is now considering TWCCEP as a preliminary work item, determining the optimum path for its adoption as an international standard.
On the second day of the Plenary Session, a workshop took place with presentations and panel discussions related to new standardization initiatives in Indonesia, production and use of premium connections in South East Asia, and the ongoing progress in connection evaluation methods.
The Indonesian hosts did an excellent job in ensuring that the ISO delegates had everything that was needed to conduct a productive session. All attendees were greatly impressed with the warm welcome, superb accommodation, and efficient organizational support extended to the meeting participants.
Trent Kaiser attended the Offshore Technology Conference, in Houston on May 3 to 6.
He was multi-tasking: doing some business development for Noetic, supporting Earl Secord from Volant Products at their booth, and representing the Canadian Heavy Oil Association as its Past President in the Government of Alberta booth.
The government is also seeking out presentation opportunities for the CHOA, so keep your eyes open on the OTC schedule for that presentation.
Trent Kaiser, Victor Yung and Scott Thompson attended at this year’s one-day Slugging It Out XVIII Conference, Calgary, AB on April 19, 2010.
Noetic Engineering was a corporate sponsor of the event.
Dr. Kaiser was one of the presenters at this year’s event his presentation was:“Simplified Inflow Control for Improved Production and Steam Chamber Development in a ‘Real’ SAGD Application”.
Jarek Nowinka and Garret Meijer attended the API 2010 Exploration & Production Winter Standard Meeting in New Orleans, January 25–29, 2010. This meeting provided an excellent opportunity for Noetic to lend its unique skills in well completion structures and materials characterization to improve active design and testing standards as well as learn the needs of the oil and gas industry.
Noetic continues its activity in connection testing standardization by participating in the ISO 13679 Work Group which is updating the Standard 13679 – Procedures for testing casing and tubing connections.
Noetic has provided material characterization services to the Work Group on Collapse of Pipe with Rounded Stress-Strain Curves and Noetic is looking forward to contributing from our extensive experience in high temperature material characterization to the API work on High Temperature Performance Properties.

Our Noetic enthusiastic team continues working on renovating our website to more fully describe our service offering and to show you our latest accomplishments and new multi-client projects.
New Orleans: Trent Kaiser attended the Society of Petroleum Engineering (SPE) Annual Technology Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) in New Orleans from October 5 to 7. In addition to attending the technical sessions, he helped out at the Alberta Government booth, providing a presence for the Canadian Heavy Oil Association, and supporting his colleague, Earl Secord, from Volant Products. Compared with previous ATCE conferences, there has been a significant shift in interest from heavy oil to unconventional gas.
Stavanger, Norway: Trent Kaiser visited Norway at the end of October to explore expanding opportunities for Noetic’s well engineering expertise in the North Sea. With widespread compaction deformations and fault movements in North Sea reservoirs, and increasingly aggressive production strategies, there are many well integrity challenges that come with maintaining production and reserves in North Sea fields. Noetic expertise, intellectual property portfolio and product development capabilities have tremendous potential for contributing to better production efficiencies in this environment. Trent’s visit was the latest of Noetic’s efforts to increase international awareness of our offerings and their potential for delivering value.
Noetic continues to offer leverage to its clients on engineering services through a variety of Multi-Client Projects (MCP’s) related to connection evaluation and material selection bases for sour thermal-well environments:
If you are interested in more information regarding these MCP’s, please contact Jarek Nowinka at: jnowinka@noetic.ca
Noetic’s client portal provides a place for sharing documents. Clients can upload files to Noetic and download Noetic reports for their projects. Great tool!

Garret Meijer attended the API 2009 Exploration & Production Standards Conference on Oilfield Equipment and Materials from June 20–24, in Westminister, Colorado. This conference participation is a part of Noetic’s ongoing contribution to the development of new technologies and standards for the energy industry and allows Noetic to be up-to-date on the latest industry issues.
Scott Thompson made a presentation at the Global Petroleum Conference in Calgary on Thursday, June 11th, 2009 entitled “Flow Optimization of Passive Tubing-Conveyed Injection and Production Well Completions for SAGD”.
Dr. Jarek Nowinka attended the ISO Technical Committee 67 Sub Committee 5 Plenary Meeting in Belo Horizonte, Brazil-April 27–28, 2009
Trent Kaiser, Scott Thompson, Dan Dall’Acqua, and Jarek Nowinka were in attendance at this year’s one-day Slugging It Out conference. Noetic Engineering was a corporate sponsor of the event.
Noetic’s Dr. Jarek Nowinka presented SPE Paper 119468, “New Standard for Evaluating Casing Connections for Thermal Well Applications”. This paper contains an overview of the philosophy and structure of the new evaluation protocol, and illustrates how engineering analysis, numerical simulation, and reduced-scale physical testing were used in the protocol development to examine impacts of various design and loading variables on connection performance under loads typical of thermal well service.
Dr. Garret Meijer attended API Conference in San Antonio, Texas. February 18th to 23rd.
